Practical School Attachment preceded by Preparatory Course
FOR TEACHERS IN ADULT LEARNING CENTRES, LANGUAGE SCHOOLS FOR ADULTS, VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS, 18+ years.
Particularly suitable for teachers of non-linguistic subjects (e.g. Maths, Science, P.E. etc, etc). All applicants receive full course information together with an Application Form and Needs Analysis. Shadows Professional Development then issues a Letter of Pre-Inscription for Comenius application purposes. Shadows Professional Development (www.shadows.org.uk) chooses a UK host school to “match” the Needs Analysis as closely as possible. The host school then issues a Letter of Invitation which is sent to the applicant. All successful applicants are invited to join a pre-course on-line forum. This enables them to prepare for their course with other European colleagues following courses on the same dates, sharing their professional experiences and expectations of their training.
Objectives
This course is aimed at providing non-native speakers of English with insights into their own and colleagues' teaching practice in a pan-European context by means of one to five weeks' practical attachment in an appropriate UK institution, preceded by a one-week course of linguistic and cultural preparation.
Methodology
1 Week: Preparatory Linguistic/Cultural Course: Interactive English language (classroom) sessions, combining a range of input modes from workshop to seminar, encouraging participants to bring their own research and experience to bear. Special Session involving linguistic and cultural support for the practical attachment.
1-5 Weeks : Institution Attachment: (5 full days per week, excluding Bank Holidays) - guided observations, shadowing the Host Teacher, directed tasks, team teaching and assignments.
Follow-up
1. Advice on how to access, from the teacher's own country, changes and developments in teaching in England. Alist of useful websites.
2. A post-attachment feedback session to encourage continuing professional development and evaluation of the impact of the course on their own day-to-day teaching.
3. All leaving participants are invited to join a post-course on-line forum. This enables them to share their experience with other European colleagues and to assess the impact of their training on their own classroom practice once back in their own country.
Structured Training Course Pre-Course
1.Each Applicant completes a detailed Application Form including teaching background. 2.Each Applicant completes a detailed professional Needs Analysis. 3.Each Applicant completes a detailed Child Safeguarding and Identity Form including references 4.All professional /safeguarding details are checked by Shadows UK. 5.Each Applicant obtains a copy of their national Criminal Record. 6.Each Record is checked by Shadows UK before departure. 7.These details are sent to the Host School. 8.Detailed written advice is given to the teacher on obtaining a copy of their Criminal Record. 9. Detailed written advice is given to the teacher on the School Attachment. 10.Detailed written advice is given to the Host School on the Institution Attachment. 11.Great care and professional expertise is taken by Shadows and the Host School in matching“ visiting teacher and host school. 12.Pre-Course on-line preparation.
During the Course
13.Each participant is given a Tutor to prepare the School Attachment, with cultural, educational and practical guidance. 14.Each Participant has a one week Preparatory Course (many teachers are not teachers of English and need help). 15.Each Participant has a “Training Officer” in the school (Head Teacher, Assistant Head Teacher, Head of Department, International Officer or Training Manager). 16.Each Participant has a “Host Teacher” in the school. 17.Each Participant is given a daily timetable according to their Needs Analysis. 18.Specific and generalist aims are catered for.
Post Course
19.Each participant is given a Tutor to receive written feedback and advise on future exploitation of what has been learned. 20.Post-Course on-line development of what was learned.
Clean Criminal Record
Visiting teachers need to show evidence of no criminal convictions. Teachers may not enter a UK educational institution without this. The Criminal Record should not be more than 6 months old on commencement of the course. Try to obtain an official copy in English. If the Criminal Record is only in the native language, an English translation is needed, certified by the Head Teacher/Principal/Training Manager or other responsible person. They should write “I certify that this is a true translation in English of the original” and sign, date (and stamp if possible).
Visiting teachers may obtain a copy of their Criminal Record at any time but it must be dated less than 6 months before their course commencement.

School Attachment Preparatory Sessions, & Feedback Sessions will include advice, help and strategies for achieving Needs Analysis Aims.
