Testing, Attendance, Progress & End-of-Course Assessment

The College prides itself on a complete system of testing and assessment from the point of initial contact with our representative abroad to departure at the end of the student's stay.

Objective testing is balanced by more subjective teacher assessment informed by accurate record keeping and student feedback.

1. Pre-Test
A multiple choice Pre-Test is available on paper and online in order to ascertain the students linguistic level/suitability for joining a Richard Language College course.
N.B. Pre-Test scores are an approximate indication. Please read carefully the warning which precedes the on-line test.

2. Arrival Testing
On arrival all students are tested thoroughly in grammar, listening comprehension and written skills. Outside the summer period, a short oral interview and a writing test are also offered. The results of these tests are used to place the students quickly and effectively into a homogeneous teaching group.

3. Attendance
A record of attendance is taken at each lesson.
Irregular attendance or absenteeism are reported to the Academic Manager and Welfare Officer. The student (or host family) is then contacted to ascertain the reason for such absenteeism. In the case of sponsored students this is reported immediately to sponsors. The attendance percentage is shown on the final certificate of studies.

4. Progress/Final Reports
At the end of the course, Richard Language College Certificates of Studies and Linguistic Profiles are presented.
Two-weekly or monthly reports are available to government or company sponsors.

5. End-of-Course Assessment
End-of-course assessment is at present viewed in terms of external examination and/or Linguistic Profile.

6. Long Courses (Weekly scheme of work, two-weekly tutorials, stage testing)
All Long Course students are given an individual two-weekly tutorial to receive feedback and help with any problems. At the weekly staff meetings, each students progress is assessed (class schemes of work are posted in classrooms.) on a weekly basis.
At regular intervals, all students on Long Courses undergo a Stage Test. This establishes the students level in relation to all other students in the College, enabling the Academic Manager and his staff to monitor progress and make recommendations concerning changes of class. At the same time, the stage test score is available to sponsors as an indicator of the student's linguistic progress.

7. Common European Framework

As a member of EAQUALS, at the end of each course, Richard Language College certifies each student's level according to the Common European Framework.
